To the person who thinks the following statement is true,
“People don’t change.”
No statement annoys me more than this one. It is an outright lie.
This idea that growth is impossible rubs me so filthy wrong.
The notion that you “simply are the way you are” and that it’s just life…. yuck.
The fatalistic belief that exits people’s mouths and becomes truth when they dare to utter these dim words… “I know myself, I won’t change.”
What a dreary commitment to utter lifelessness?
You have a bountiful table full of the most desirable and tasty food, and in one foul swoop you are choosing sweep all your options off the table except for the stale old mashed potatoes.
#MashedPotatoesForLife
Why are you settling for such mediocrity?
Why are you surrendering to a life of average, with little adventure apart from that cruise you are saving up to take in 5 years?
Again, I say a profound and guttural “yuck” to this mournfully cherished belief that people can’t change and at your age it’s just the way things are.”
Stop this right now. It serves no one.
It stops the holy evolution of the human soul in its tracks.
Anyone can dream, and anyone can succeed.
It’s also dishonest to say, “I know myself and I won’t change.”
Dreadfully dishonest. A dark lie disguised as a settled truth.
If we could peel back the curtain of your soul and dive deeply into your inner recesses, we would find the actual truth.
“You’ve given up on yourself.”
Maybe you got hurt? Perhaps you failed a few times or a lot. Or was there a dim voice that told you sternly that your dreaming big and wanting more was irresponsible?”
Whatever the cause, the result was the same.
You stopped believing in the beautiful impossibleness that exists deep inside every person.
This unbelief is fatal.
It infects a human being with “averageness” day after day, week after week, year after year, life after life.
I need you to stop it now.
Your children need you to reverse course.
Your neighbors need to see the glimmer of hope in your eyes again.
You need to find your spark and dance with the joy of an angel again.
Our world needs you fully alive, breathing with vitality, dancing with optimism.
You can change.
You can grow.
Your dreams still exist.
Is it time to find them again? To put the spring back in your step?
Please believe again.
Love

P.S. You might not know, but I’ve launched a new community that gathers on Zoom every week for people who still dare to dream. I have 10 guest passes for next week. If you want one, comment “Guest Pass” below.
While every person has the potential to change, many never will. The seduction of the familiar will keep people in horrible places inside and out. Inertia is a powerful force. I have seen money, dozens of people's time, resources, and support expended trying to help people change. In too many instances to count it came to nothing as the object of the effort reverted to the familiar. After a while the people offering support run out of pieces of themselves to give. I would offer that individuals can change, the change has to come from within. Those who say people never change may be those who have tried to help until they just couldn't anymore.
Your words open doors.
What a life giving letter
