Have you considered that some people are just simply lazy? They just don't want to do the work? Sometimes it's because they have no training for change, whether or not that's their fault. What seems to be at large is the lack of knowledge of good ideas that do guide many people in their own lives. And sometimes people have a hard time seeing the concreteness of any idea, by the way over-advanced fantasies put out by advertising media since the end of WW2 especially, making everything into a competition for image and status by buying more and more stuff, when a moderate attitude

seems not to suffice. People feel defeated by onslaughts like this. Just some things I've noticed in 40 years of being a health care worker.

This is an insightful and thoughtful comment Robin... I love it. I always think of a person when they were young and how most at some stage had a sense of optimism or a dream. They wanted to learn something new, become something, be recognized in some way, get better at something else, fall in love, go on an adventure, etc...

and then something(s) happen that change this... I'm not sure if it's laziness, and i would be reluctant to call it so. Even laziness itself would seem to me to be a symptom of despondency or disappointment rather than a character trait.

I wish so much to keep growing my entire life that when I encounter people who seem to have little motivation it strikes me deep

It may help to consider that some people may express the thoughts that change is impossible when they feel stuck, aware that their present condition is untenable and change is fearful, sometimes as a result of past trauma. They've lost the vision to see possibility. Many people who say that they won't change, realize that they cannot not change and they awaken. Usually a life event or a loved one will ignite the spark. Change is inherent in life at any level. Alternatively, they may remain stuck in their fear for their entire life, and many do, but those individuals need compassion, because that is a painful place to reside.

I rant too. We have lots to rant about recently. My comment was in. No way meant to be critical, but just to add dimension to the consideration.

I agree, I was ranting a little but i meant it in a hopeful way. Trauma definitely causes us to stop dreaming. Change happens anyway, I love that you state it as inherent. It is either growth or atrophy, you are changing either quickly or slowly in one direction or the other. I hope to always grow.

While every person has the potential to change, many never will. The seduction of the familiar will keep people in horrible places inside and out. Inertia is a powerful force. I have seen money, dozens of people's time, resources, and support expended trying to help people change. In too many instances to count it came to nothing as the object of the effort reverted to the familiar. After a while the people offering support run out of pieces of themselves to give. I would offer that individuals can change, the change has to come from within. Those who say people never change may be those who have tried to help until they just couldn't anymore.

Your first sentence is very profound Fred, as is your second and your third. Inertia is a powerful force... wow... Thanks for sharing your wisdom here.

Once again Geoff your writing ascends above the notion that being negative is not profound. To change the situation that living to reinvent yourself and not falling prey to conformist thought. To denounce that every thing is prefixed. This and many of your pieces of writing read like freeverse poetry. I find it difficult to continue to stay in that optimistic way of being. To talk and be around people who reassure your self worth. Difficult to find sometimes. Perhaps this is why I have a compulsion to write. Your writing inspires another to stay alive. To know your path can be greater by starting with the positive mindset. Poetry when in-depth for me is the most profound act you can do. The inner workings of the mind within a particular human being. The intimacy, the sincerity that you mean every moment that you utter at that particular time. Posisitivity breeds the possibility to more positivity. I had writing something better in the comment but it erased it when I pressed the back space. To yearn for people who think the same. Mindfulness to change for the greater.
