It frustrates the hell out of me…

People who crave attention on social media but have no genuine interest in building relationships.

You know… the ones who steal our highly engaging questions AND then never reply to the people on their feeds who answer them.

And YET instead of living in the frustration, I thought I’d explain a little more about social media engagement and what it is… and what it is not.

What it is not…

Genuine social media engagement is not YOU getting loads of likes, shares and comments…

Attention is not engagement

Just like in real life, if you make a scene and get loads of people to stare at you… you have their attention but you are a long way from establishing any kind of relationship.

So just because you “borrow” a post from someone and get loads of comments etc Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you are winning, that you have loads of engagement, that your business is going to get some massive and huge benefit from a few hundred comments.

It won’t…

I repeat again, attention is not engagement… you are barely scratching the surface of what’s possible.

Genuine Social Media Engagement

True engagement is always about what happens next…

It’s falling into an abyss of connection, where you are always discovering more about the other person.

True social media engagement therefore means that you have a thirst and a hunger for learning more about your sphere of influence.

It also means that they are learning more about you.

When people answer your questions, they are sharing something of themselves…. Are you curious about their answers? Are you listening? Are you sharing something of your own experience?

Are you growing the connection?

For the paid supporters of this blog, just below, I’ll give you an example of a question I used this week to establish a stronger connection with my sphere.

Feel free to use this question yourself, but remember the true juice is in how you respond to the people who answer.
